I added it to my subject and message text boxes and tested it by sending some generic urls (link to a facebook page etc), and that worked fine.

But the problem actually remains, it seems, and it wasn’t the plugin after all. It began when the host server was upgraded from PHP 5.6 to 7.1 (brought on by another prompt from your plugin!)

Host guy says he can’t find any errors that could be causing it. He tried switching to PHP 7.0 as well. Any clues?

Ah. It was the disable site plugin I run as I’m building that caused it. Thank you for your swift reply.
