The problem was me being new to WordPress: the “customize” link in the admin hotbar with the “menus” link one level deeper does NOT behave the same as the “Appearance / menus”.
If I go to Dashboard / appearance / menus, everything is indeed there.
So, lesson learned, and indeed a wonderfull plugin now that I get to enjoy it again!
