Reporting back — success!
NS Support was no help with adding a server alias for me. So I used the Advanced DNS Manager on Network Solutions website to add the host alias (*.mintdesign.us.com). Here is a link for NS users to follow:

Then I mapped the SUB sites to the unique domains and they work now.

OK Thanks you so much! I think I have the big picture. Can I confirm with you both! I am in my database swapping out localhost. I will finish that the way I said before…

(My site is down because I am doing the localhost/wordpress swap in my sql dump file. Like in these examples, with localhost/wordpress/ replaced by my main site:

and then I will,
Import database sql file back up to my database manager in NS.
Test site.
In Network Admin, turn off the free domain mapping plugin.
Test site.
Call NS about having all sites pointing to a “server alias” so the domain mapping will work, not the IP address that they all point to now. And not the database server alias or database IP address)(Andrea can you confirm this please?)

The purpose of the domain mapping plugin is to translate the (new, not localhost,etc.))domains in the wp database tables to unique domains that won’t have the main site name before them.
Please confirm that this sounds right. Here goes. I’ll report back when I am done.

The question was, in my database search and replace for locahost/wordpress in those instances which option is correct. So you are saying that below is the correct way? That’s different than Andrea’s instruction to replace instances of localhost/wordpress with “mintdesign.us.com”

Ask them what? My questions were to your reference to server alias in regards to domain mapping. 1)Is the database server alias what you are referring to and 2)is that what wordpress needs in Network Admin?

I don’t know what parked or mirrored means. The domains all point to the same IP address and root folder associated with the hosting package at Network Solutions. I do not have a folder named “wordpress” anymore. When I view the A records in the DNS manager they are all the same.

When you say “They need to be a serveralias” what do you mean?

The server alias in my MySQL Database Details? The IP address in there is different. Is that what you mean? Should I use the database IP address in my Network Admin when I begin the mapping?

Do I leave the instances of localhost/wordpress/in my db? or do I replace with a or b examples above?

How should I tell my webhost account to direct the mapped domains? They are pointing to the root, htdocs.

Yes. That’s correct. And https://www.sherstudios.net is another SUB site. I used the WordPress MU Domain Mapping Plugin. First, I assigned the SUB site domains to the mint design hosting package in Network Solutions. It seemed mapped already actually. But then I followed the directions from fronterahouse.com.

My site is down temporarily as I am putting in a test db that I swapped out more “localhost” references. But do you think It may be the way I mapped the sites?

Tried that too. Same thing on all subsites – only the first page works on the subsites and the links are still directing to the main site home page.

I think the problem is the database changes that I made when I moved the site. I replaced localhost with mintdesign.us.com in my db. But I’m seeing alot of instances in my db dump of localhost/wordpress/tinasher and localhost/wordpress/mintdesign. Since I ftp’d my files to the root directory on my shared host, was i supposed to get rid of all instances of /wordpress/ in my db? In my config I switched the PATH define to ‘/’ from ‘/wordpress/’. I really don’t think I understand how the subsites path work and how they are supposed to look in the db…. Any recommendations on what I do from here?

Did that … Still same problem. Menus, pages, not connecting to rest of site. Is it my database needs checking? Do I go back in there? or is WP not finding where to get all the links?

Next problem…. the other pages and links on all my subsites link to my main site. Is that a path problem?

OK I resaved the permalinks. Same problem — no images on the home page and, the only page that loads).
Actually I need to create another .htaccess file. Maybe that’s it. Can you help me with that? Support at NS said it was bad and put in a temporary one when I went live with the site. They said I can recreate it. There wasn’t much on it.

I re-set them from my server account. What do you mean by re-save? Where do I do this and how?

Could this be my problem too? After moving my WP Network 3.1.1 my subsites only display the first page and without images.
