I had the same problem and after many hours of struggling I managed to find a way of doing it using gravity view.
you need to be logged in to your wordpress site in order for it to work, so not an ideal situation if you are wanting visitors or users of a website to be able to update records, but you can do.

You will need to configure the different roles and select who belongs to each role.

Edit your notifications under settings for the form, and enable conditional logic.
You will be able to set it up there.
