OK, found the culprit by disabling all plugins and re-enabling them one at a time. A plugin from InLinks was responsible for the problem.

WordPress version is 2.8.6 by the way, not 2.8.5 as it says in the sidebar.

I just tested it with sponge set to 1 which alleviates the problem. But when sponge is not 1 or not there at all, from what I can see in the plugin code, the post is filtered through wpautop, which for some reason unknown to me results in the above error.

Maybe the theme I’m using (Thesis) somehow doesn’t use wpautop…

I can confirm this bug in 1.5.1a too. It unsets the checkbox on the Edit Post page.
