I have found it. It was because the Events Manager has a custom post type called Location, and I had set up a Custom Taxonomy using Types called Location. By renaming my taxonomy the problem was fixed!

Phew thanks esmi – it was seemingly a conflict between 2 plugins. I have deactivated one and they are all back now – panic over. Thanks a million.

Hi thanks for the info but I can’t relate it to my gallery. What do the last 3 numeric values represent (I think the penultimate one is the image id?)

it looks to me as though the hyperlink is not working when you click on the thumbnail either. The text output looks to be most of the description plus some other bits I don’t recognise.

If I suppress the template selection then I get the main image displayed correctly with the description, but I just get no caption under the thumbnail.

So are we saying that the ALT text and title are just used for hover over but not displayed anywhere?

All I want to do is have a short description under the thumbnail with a longer one displayed when clicked on – standard gallery functionality I’d have thought?

Thanks for all of this advice. However I still cannot get it to work! I never see the ALT text displayed, ever. If I set the display options to use the gallery-caption.php template then it displays the whole description (which in my case looks rubbish).
There is a comment above by rkgneuschul which says –

your shortcode or ATP settings need to say that you want to use the Alt/Desc tags as a caption.

where is this setting? I have looked everywhere but can’t find it!

I would also like to be able to do this – I’m either going totally mad or I just can’t believe there is not an easy way to display the caption/alt text below each thumbnail – what on earth is the point in that??

I do have another question though – where can I say to display the post date – it does say in the instructions you can do this but I can’t find it anywhere! Thanks.

Secondary to this, I’ve always been of the mindset that the sidebar Related Posts should work from listing posts based on matching category. I see there are plugins however that use algorithms to achieve this – what is the general thought here – am I placing too much emphasis on trying to list items based on category and should I just let it try and work out what are the related posts? What do most people do? Thanks again.

Yes I can follow that, thanks for your help. I just got the feeling that what I was trying to do shouldn’t have been that difficult, that it was a common thing to do. Really that I had not been barking up the wrong tree. Thanks again.

Hi yes that is correct. Although as mentioned I’ve got the listing of the posts working via a plugin, it’s the link back to page A I’m struggling to get my head around.

Hi yes sorry I meant from the annual events posts. I have given each of the posts the same specific category.
