By default, WordPress does not create thumbnails of pdf files. It can (depending upon your current theme) use a generic icon to represent those files but that’s about it.

<Tony: I know this. My comment above was “…gallery idea was to link an image in a gallery to a PDF file.” The problem with the blur is a WP issue b/c I uploaded a 300dpi image (should be absolutely no blur) and it still blurred. I gave up after repeated failed attempts to upload an image with proper screen resolution (72-96dpi). This is a known issue from other posts I’ve seen on this forum.>

Did you try using CSS? That would be the correct way to do this.

<Tony: I did not try this b/c I may just link the samples to an HTML file that contains an image as a separate popup page. Thank you for your quick reply, I appreciate how fast you got back to me. Great job! :)>

The simplest fix – I’ve spent about 8 hours on this already – at this point is to just list bulleted links to the work samples. I updated the page (https://elementsmarketing.co/content-for-nurturing/thought-leadership-samples/) with bullets and absolute links and it opens html files fine and still is crashing with PDFs. Thanks for your quick reply and help. Tony

At first i tried using the ‘add media’ function but i did not like the way it blurred the thumbnail images for the covers of the PDF documents. The images were high enough resolution I know, but it was just something with the WP software that was low-res’ing the images. I tried several ways to add images in a gallery that linked to a PDF and could get it to work but again the thumbnails looked like crap, very blurry. Somewhere between the orig images (which are 300dpi) and the thumbnails WP generates, is blurring the images.

The other issue with the gallery is I could not add borders around the images and padding (unless i do it in photoshop) in WP once they are part of a gallery. It’s strange b/c you can edit these attributes as single images but as part of a gallery that function is not available in WP – at least not readily apparent to me.

So the main issue with gallery is how it displays the thumbnails and also how it lines up the thumbnails on the page. I can’t have it scroll as a sliding image gallery b/c you can’t read the text on the documents. As i am showing samples of my writing in these PDFs this is not an option. The gallery idea was to link an image in a gallery to a PDF file. The gallery is limiting in function for what i wanted to do, I’m afraid to say. Unless i am missing something. This is my first WP site but i am no newbie to design and HTML/PHP. Thank you.

So i just updated the page trying simple text links and it is still crashing FF 20. I can open a *.htm file fine but none of the PDFs open with a full link embedded in the code. OMG this is frustrating…
    thx
