Eureka!!!!!

The problem was in fact quite simple: I had a naming conflict,
between my subdirectory (CAT) and the name used by the permalink structure (CATEGORY/).

(cat = short for category, cat = short for catalan, the language, which is the name of the directory)

The URI was https://www.naucoclea.com/cat/category/exposicions

(…/cat/cat..)

Now, the URI reads https://www.naucoclea.com/cat/activitats/exposicions

Changed the word “category” in classes.php for
“activitats”, and everything works fine now..

Maybe this was sheer luck, but now I’m left wondering if there are other names we should avoid when installing WP in a subdirectory (my choice of name was compulsory, it’s the language of the blog!)

I don’t know what else to do: have read again all the related entried in this forum, search the web, made a fresh copy of one of the two working sites, created a new database and user and uploaded a backup of the working site.. trashed the .htaccess, changed its permissions to 666, to 664, to 777, nothing.. Still the same.

Site is working fine on default URI, with any other type of URI set in the permalink screen, the pages work fine, the individual articles work fine, but when i click on the menu to view a category, i get a 404!!

Please, I would really really appreciate your help!!

I am really, truly desperate. I have spent 3 whole days on this…
