It looks like it is applied – the link says “taxonomy=category&post_type=article.” I think I just misunderstood what the [display-posts] shortcode with custom post type is supposed to do. When used it does display only posts from the custom post type, with the correct categories appended. I think it is working at intended, I simply was expecting something else.

Sorry, I am a bit of a newbie with wordpress, still learning and working my way around day by day. Thanks again for your reply!

I found a way to do this with an existing shortcode (available either through the theme or perhaps it comes with the WordPress). I find this by reading the functions.php. Can’t believe I missed it before.

Also think I misunderstood what the specific shortcode I was using was for. After adding another custom post the error message went away and the shortcode results in a display of a list of posts from the custom post type and the categories they are in.

Nevermind. Not sure what happened but apparently if I don’t specify post type the correct category listing is displayed. I am not really sure what happened. Perhaps I simply forgot to refresh the post.
