    Hi,

Turned off ALL plugins. Deactivated WP Edit, deleted it and then re-installed tinymce – no change. Then deactivated tinymce as well. Problem persists.

WORKED GREAT! Problem fixed and site is now up-to-date with latest WP Update Version 4.4.1

    Thank you very much.

Thank you for the quick reply.

While you are correct that this looks complicated, after a once through I think I can handle it no worries.

I’ll let you know how it goes.

As it turns out the problem was in the Theme – surprise, surprise! – and required the services of a pro to fix it. We are still NOT upgrading to the update “Political Org” theme as it causes problems with out websites.

I would love to tell you how to solve this problem but I don’t really understand what was done so I am unable to post the solution.

However, IF you are experiencing this problem, you can contact my advisor Rob Docherty at [email protected]

    I appreciate the input.

Deactivating all plugins did not solve the problem nor is this theme specific as switching themes did not solve the problem.

I also tried restoring the site to an earlier date which also did not solve the problem.

So, where do I go from here?

    Thank you for your reply.

After working with the guide for a while and getting nowhere I decided to hire a professional to make the necessary changes since this website is the organizations flagship.

It took him an hour, basically following the guide but with some important side issues taken care of.

Update to WP 4.1: Disable all plugins and the custom theme.
    reset to a basic theme.

Preform WP update and then reactivate plugins and custom theme.

Update all plugins – this took some curious editing as several plugins had issues with WP 4.1

Up date the custom theme The Professional – Child and the ePanel via the Elegant Website theme updater. This also required some curious editing as the theme just did not want to update probably because it was an original theme over 5 years old and never updated that I could tell.

Finally back to the original website to reinstall several plugins which were not working properly and amazingly the site was completely working and operational.

I learned a lot about WP and some of the basics which I was unaware of. Altogether a profitable and positive experience.

    Hi Juggledad,

Interesting post and I’ll try and be sort with my reply.

I did try the plugin thing, both moving them and renaming them (de-activating them that you suggest in several different ways and it did not solve the problem.

I also tried different themes and that didn’t work either.

I know that there is a solution to this but I was unable to find it which leaves it to Mr. Murphy to strike again which I am certain that he will. But, it was a fun and learning situation and our take down and reinstall is resulting in a better site than the old one as we explore new and different items and presentations.

All in all a very positive learning experience.

Thank you again for your input and suggestions.

User got pissed and went elsewhere – just as well to learn the reality of the attitude of the user before we spent a lot effort on this site.

Well, after two of us have been on this case for hours and hours we finally did a take down and reinstall. The Content Manager was OK with this but I am disappointed that we never found the solution which I know is out there somewhere.

Strikes me that WordPress needs to address this problem with an update and at least let us into the Dashboard where we could delete the offending plugins with out all the super tech editing and searching – IMHO

Thanks for the replies. After a lot of consideration and a lot of conversation within the organization we are going with the .org sites since they have so much to offer. The .com is just too limited for our needs.

Solved this problem by deleting both sites and starting over. Oh, well.

    Hi Matt, WPyogi,

    Thanks for your reply.

All of the supported sites are basically Clubs with content being added regarding meetings, local issues, etc. So, I suspect that this would fall into the ‘basic functionality’ category.

Thanks for the link. That went a long way to giving me some background. But, I still don’t really see the advantage of the URL.ORG sites over the WP.COM sites EXCEPT where the possible limitations might apply. We use a lot of different plugins based on a particular sites desires for instance.

    Hi juggledad,

Thank for the replies and info. I do understand the differences now. However, I checked with my host provider an they advise that the memory allocation for the Databases is 1Gb. That should handle all my sites but I am still getting the “Fatal Error;” message. Just doesn’t make sense to me but then such is life.

I am trying your last suggestion today when I get a few minutes aside for this project.

Thank again for your replies. I really appreciate it.

The account that my problem site is hosted on has a 1Gb memory allocation so I don’t get why I am getting the “Fatal Error:Out of Memory” error when the “Database Update Required” runs. I am really stuck with this one.

    Any other ideas?
