I could not find any decent documentation on using the wp-multi-network and used a different approach to work around this issue.

However, if you know of any good references on how to use the wp-multi-network, I would certainly take a look at them.

After following the instructions to install multisite support https://codex.www.ads-software.com/Create_A_Network, I also got the “error establishing database connection” message.

However, like kermit666, I also missed out the

define('MULTISITE', true);

Adding this to the wp-config.php fixed the issue
