This problem is still occurring for me. It would be really nice to get an answer, as at present I don’t always get to reply to a comment in reasonable time.

This is still a major problem for me. Does anyone have a solution please?

Anyone had the same problem of emails advising of a new commenter but not an approved commenter? Thanks.

Further, I deactivated all my plugins and got the same result.

    Any thoughts please?

Another strange thing. When I do a second anonymous trial comment, I don’t get a notification. The comment appears when I am logged in but doesn’t (after an hour so far) appear when I am not logged in. i.e. the visitor doesn’t see their comment, even though it isn’t held for moderation.

    Something is different.

Don’t worry about screenshot, that’s great advice thanks. I didn’t know about that option. That worked for me, and I can see how the new post comes up in the block editor, but I can switch to classic in the sidebar. Excellent! Thanks for such a prompt response.

I’m still experiencing the same problems – I can’t “see” my self-hosted WordPress blog on Safari, but I can see it on Chrome & Firefox, and I can also see the dashboard on Safari. And I can see my other blog that is structurally very similar (just different in content and styling) fine on Safari also.

Something strange has happened, and I wonder if anyone has any other suggestions please?

Thanks for checking. But I’m still experiencing the same problems. I can view or work on my site on CHrome, but Safari just freezes after loading the header, or sometimes without loading anything.

Here’s a curious thing that may be a clue. When I first tried to load the home page tonight after reading your comment, it loaded the header and the hero image, loaded a couple of words, and then froze. After that, it was back to what I said.

So there must be something that stops the load after a certain time or point, and that point isn’t always exactly the same. I have no idea how that can be, but it is what happened.

Yes, I understand I can’t use more than one optimisation plugins, but I tested them sequentially, not all at once. Now I have none activated except the server side caching and NGINX Helper plugin suggested by my webhost (Inmotion).

    Thanks for those thoughts.

    1. Yes, using a Captcha may be the best first step. It nips the problem in the bud right at the start, if the spambots haven’t found a way around it. Subscribe to Comments Reloaded has this option, so I should try it at least. (I have been reluctant because it just adds to the “weight” of the website and discourages commenters, but it looks like I have no choice.)

    2. The email filter would only help if I could adequately identify “Mail Delivery Failed” emails from spambots and then trash those emails. Perhaps I can do that, but I don’t want to trash other emails.

    3. I wasn’t aware of “verify email” plugins but ti looks like they check the subscription list, but my problem occurs before they get onto the list.

    4. Of course another option is to remove the “subscribe to comments” option altogether, and just let people keep coming back to check, but that cure seems almost as bad as the disease.

So thanks for your help. It has taken me a little while, and this discussion, to get my head around the problem. I’ll now be able to work on it better.

Thanks. Jetpack is able to do email notifications on the comment form, but doesn’t seem able to provide an email subscription widget to go in the footer, nor a “latest posts” widget or shortcode, both of which I had previously.

Update: I have isolated the problem.

The enqueue function in functions.php loads both fonts in one instruction. But Safari will only recognise the second one loaded. When I change the order, Lato is shown correctly and the display font goes to the generic font.

This is strange but seems to be the case. If anyone has ideas, that would be great thanks, otherwise I will try an Apple forum.

    Thanks.

OK thanks, I’ll give it a try. (Sorry to be so long replying. Life was happening.)

Hi, yes I could do it in a Classic block. clear:both does work, but I forgit to add that it isn’t easy to stop longer paragraphs wrapping under the image, which I don’t want. So I think the block editor might make this easier.

So Column block is the obvious way to do it, but I can’t seem to style it to adjust the column widths. Do you know a way to do that please?

Otherwise I may be able to use Layout Grid Block. I haven’t installed that plugin yet and I’m trying to keep the site as lean as possible with as few plugins as possible, but that would be my next try after column.

OK thanks for that help. I’m sorry I caused a problem for you.

    Hi Sybre,

More strange news. Since my first site is now working, I decided I would test the second site, which I hadn’t updated. So I updated SEOF, and as soon as I tried to go to the WP Mail SMTP settings I got the WordPress “screen of death”, with the standard message, something like “Your site is broken. Go to this link to find out what to do.”

I did what I did before and closed down WordPress and re-opened, and it wouldn’t load the site or the dashboard but gave me the same screen (not the message I quoted in my opening post) – several times. So I tried a few other links on my browser, and when I came back to load the site it was fine. I’ve tried going to WP Mail SMTP settings and SEOF settings and both seem fine.

That is an accurate report of what happened, but it seems strange to me and I don’t know what you can make of it.
