I don’t know about advertising, but every theme have different advantages. Like if someone wants to show a main picture on the header but is not able to because of current theme, the changing the theme is the only option. Else one can opt for coding also, but not much of us choose that. And like this for big corporate houses or professionals, their needs make them switch themes.

And yes, providing more eye-candy can also give a hike in traffic but not for long. Content is the main factor.
