It hasn’t been abandoned, we simply dropped the ball on updating the WordPress SVN repo. We patched this issue some time ago, but clearly whoever reported the issue was content to just grab our GitHub repo copy, and we missed updating SVN. We’ll have it updated soon.

Thanks for the feedback. Actually it works fully with the open source version available at vanillaforums.org. We offer a hosted version for those that don’t want to deal with hosting a forum.

First: Thanks for trying this out! The embedded comments feature is still very new, but we’ve got some customers using it in production environments and the results are great so far.

That being said, the download/stable version of Vanilla available from VanillaForums.org is *behind* this plugin. Only unstable Vanilla (bleeding edge, available at GitHub) has the most recent code for this. Embedding is no longer a Vanilla plugin, but a core feature with it’s own admin page and everything. The official 2.1 open source release of Vanilla will contain these changes and all of the latest code to go along with it. Until then, you kind of need to be a cowboy to work with the unstable code.

Both of your issues here have been dealt with in the most recent code pushes. We don’t have an official release date for 2.1 yet.

The recent discussion list pulls only unannounced discussions. Once a discussion has been “announced”, it is basically “sticky” and will always remain at the top of the discussion list. For this reason, it’s not included in the “Recent Discussions” widget because it may, or may not actually be “recent”.
