The theme is Twenty Seventeen, a standard WP theme. I have tried some other default WP themes and all give the same result.
With the last test, I entered the name of the gallery with language tags ( for ex. [:nl]Portret[:en]Portrait[:]) and when saving, I see the name as “Portrait”, even in the Dutch (nl) admin page and on the front-end website. Sometimes however, it appears as “[:nl]Portret[:en]Portrait[:]” .
This is documented with the schreenshots in this link.

Changing the album name or the picture titles in the same way works fine.

When looking in the DB, I do see the original names (eg [:nl]Portret[:en]Portrait[:]) for picture and gallery names.

I have found the reason for the php error: an old page that contained the old code to show the gallery. Removing that and using the correct block solved the php error.

However… the translation problem of the gallery titels – using WP-multilang – remains. I had to remove the [:en], [:nl] and ending [:] of the 2 used languages in the gallery titles and replace them with a bilangual title such as “DuchName | EngName” . The titles of pictures is ok, only the gallery.

But maybe that’s for another subject?

Additional info:
It might have something to do with the WP Multilang plugin: The site uses 2 languages and in the Gallery setup I used [:en] and [:nl] to create different gallery titles in English and Dutch. That worked before the upgrade, but now I see for example [:nl]Kleine Mythes[:en]Tiny Myths[:] in stead of just Kleine Mythes in Dutch…

I just solved the problem I think: it was a conflict with the Google Listings and Ads pluging that seemed to be still active while testing.

Hi weigertj: It works with other languages, except Dutch. Unfortunately I am not getting feedback from the qTranslate-X makers…

yep, the translater I used for translation was not supported anymore, so I switched to a simple google translate. Unfortunately this is not always very good and not editable, but there is to much to translate manually (as you could see on the site, i guess I have a year work to translate in English and French myself ?? ).
Permalinks are set to topic name and all pages seem to translate fine.

Any news on this?
I also installed the IcoMoon package. In the left section of the menu page, I can select these as icons and click save. Current Menu settings are default.
Still, I have no option to pick an icon in the menu.

Yes, setting the permalinks to default solves it. However, due to the amount of internal and external links to lots of pages on the site, it is not possible to use other permalinks than page name.

Same problem here. I didn’t notice this topic, so made a new one.
Default permalinks works, but not using the page name permalinks. For some other plugins and for dozens of internal links, this page name permalink is needed.
