I’ve discovered syntax error on the Chrome developer console:

Ok, so I’ve now stripped this right back. No themes other than Twenty Sixteen and all plugins disabled…still have the problem.

Deleted all files except wp-content and wp-config.php…still have the same problem.

…next step is to install a clean install on a spare domain
