In reply to: WordPress does not recognize me or my accountAnd just to clarify, the log-in info *IS* the same for both WordPress.com and for yourwebsite.com/wp-admin
If my login info won’t let me in to one of those, I can’t get into either. And if it WILL let me into one, I can get into both.
Neither of which has anything to do with logging in to www.ads-software.com.

In reply to: WordPress does not recognize me or my accountWell thank you for posting back. I still do not see any part of what I’ve written over the last 2 days which suggests in any way that I am having trouble logging into www.ads-software.com.
Everything you quoted made reference to issues with WordPress.COM, and as I said earlier, if there is some other place that users with self-hosted WordPress-based sites should be going to look for help, I’d love to know about it.
At this point, yes, I was finally able to log in with 2 different browsers now to https://gillianbagwell.com/wordswordswords/wp-admin/ again after getting the message since yesterday that my log-in info was invalid. So far so good. I went through my webhost and changed the password (again) via phpMyAdmin, and made sure that “MD5” encryption was selected from the pull down menu in the edit user area, (as they suggested) which may have solved the problem.

In reply to: WordPress does not recognize me or my accountOMG. Seriously?
I am not having any issues logging in to www.ads-software.com and I’m fully aware at this point that it is completely separate from WordPress.COM. I’m not sure why you keep bringing that up?
And there is absolutely NO support of any kind for WordPress.com self-hosted sites other than the “help” link at the top of the page which goes to “support forums”, which is where we are. So if there is someplace else that people should be looking for help on their self-hosted WordPress sites, I’d love to know about it.
When I go to https://gillianbagwell.com/wordswordswords/wp-admin
OR
go to https://Wordpress.COM
And click on LogIn, then enter the info I used *yesterday* in a brand new successful installation, which worked at those URLs as of yesterday afternoon, I got the message that the info was “invalid” and I could not get in. Furthermore, when I clicked on the “forgot password” link, and entered the email address I had used *yesterday* in the brand new installation of WordPress, I got the message that there was no account to be found with that email address. That problem remains a mystery. I had not changed any login info, so I have no idea why it worked yesterday afternoon and stopped working last night. Again, screen captures galore of every step of the process verify that the log-in info I was entering today matched the info which worked yesterday.
Now, after spending a couple of hours in tech support chat w/my webhost, I am once again logged in to my self-hosted admin panel from one browser though the other browsers still tell me my info is invalid. Webhost stressed that MD5 needed to be selected when making a password change from within phpMyAdmin, or it could cause issues w/the database, so perhaps that was the problem.
Hopefully I will not suddenly find that the info which works right now is “invalid” 2 hours from now, because that is what has happened twice before now, with no concrete explanation.

In reply to: WordPress does not recognize me or my accountSo when I go to https://gillianbagwell.com/wordswordswords/wp-admin, I am STILL locked out, same as if I go to https://wordpress.com and try to log in.

If I were able to log in to my WordPress.COM account, I would not be posting here at all. Perhaps the title of this thread would help to clarify the problem:
“WordPress does not recognize me or my account”.
I have installed WordPress (successfully) to my own domain, and through my webhost I am able to see the new database and new user info that I created just yesterday during the installation and have reviewed the info through phpMyAdmin to verify that I have the correct username, password, and email address. Which I do.
But WordPress thinks I don’t, so I am again LOCKED OUT of my WordPress.COM account.

In reply to: WordPress does not recognize me or my accountHi, thanks.
This is a brand new installation as of yesterday, to a totally different domain, new email address, all changed as I started back at square one trying to resolve this issue that I ran into a few months ago that was never resolved.
It’s a new site on WordPress.com (NOT .org). I’m just posting here trying to figure out why I keep getting locked out of my WordPress.COM account.
So, site is: gillianbagwell.com/wordswordswords
Username (which I can verify when I check at phpMyAdmin) is: GllianBagwell@WordsWordsWords
(note the missing first “i”—that was a typo but I left it that way to try and avoid making confusing, unnecessary changes). So I’ve checked phpMyAdmin and looked at the wp-config.php file and they both show the password the same, but I’m still not allowed in.
And fwiw, when I couldn’t get back in last night after successfully installing and logging in yesterday afternoon, I looked at the phpMyAdmin and saw that the password was somehow changed to a random string of characters, so I changed it within phpMyAdmin, and now WordPress.com tells me there is no account associated w/ the email address that I set this all up under (which shows correctly in phpMyAdmin).

In reply to: Forgot username — how to get reminder?Assuming it’s possible to have more than one account on WordPress, create a new account, install WordPress from the very beginning as if I had never done it before, and start back at square one.
This problem remains unresolved. A horrific quirk of WordPress, no explanation and no solution. I cannot spare any more time for this, so I’ll have to give up on it (again) and come back to it some other time (again) and either hope it resolves, or waste many more hours trying to “fix” it by jumping through hoops.

In reply to: Forgot username — how to get reminder? What you are describing isn’t normal. Is there something restoring the database to a previous state?
Nope, nothing exotic or external to my knowledge happening with any system settings or domain settings. And I’m sure that WordPress wasn’t designed to be buggy and broken, but every time I have ever tried to use it for its intended purpose (that is, build a website using a template), I have run into one allegedly “unusual” problem after another and had to undo, redo, reconfigure, or work around something.
Also do you have access to the web server’s file system? If you do you may want to rename the wp-content/plugins directory to something such as plugins-old. That will force all of your plugins to be disabled.
Yes, I do. I can try that and see if I am then allowed to login using my username. I had intended to use the plugins on the site I was trying to build. I guess I’ll have to dispense with that idea as well and resort to yet another workaround to get it to work properly.
How will you do that step specifically? Especially if you are locked out?
No idea how to do that actually but it’s all just par for the course with WordPress. Seems simplest to just create a new user account and start from scratch all over again, since it seems to hate my username and I can’t change it, reinstalling WordPress and recreating the website to match what I’ve done so far. Not simple at all really.

In reply to: Forgot username — how to get reminder?OK, half an hour later got the email link to reset the password. Successfully did that yet AGAIN.
However, the password has never been the problem, and the original problem remains UNRESOLVED.
The problem (again) is that when I go to the login page and enter the CORRECT username (exactly as it appears in the phpMyAdmin and exactly as it appears on my profile page when I managed to actually login 2 days ago), WordPress tells me
“***** not a valid username on WordPress.com, please try again with the correct username.”
And my only option is to “reset the password”. Which does not solve the problem.
And according to at least one other thread, it does NOT “work for everyone else”, there are other people with access problems as well.

In reply to: Forgot username — how to get reminder?Well then it’s completely and utterly F-ed up and broken and doesn’t work the way it claims to.
Forum: Fixing WordPress
In reply to: cannot get in to my site to edit???It WAS correct, and I HAVE been entering it correctly. Was able to go through the steps described in phpMyAdmin, verified username and changed password (yet AGAIN, though I’m still locked out) and will now have to spend the time figuring out how to reate a new account and migrate the work I’ve already done over to a new user account since this one is apparently FUBAR’d.
I had taken a screen capture of the profile page at one point when I was miraculously logged in successfully to the account, and it verified that the same username I’ve been entering, and same username as what shows up in phpMyAdim, is in fact, the correct username, so there’s really no good reason for any of this. No amount of “resetting the password” has helped this problem.

In reply to: Forgot username — how to get reminder?Well, thank you. So I tried that, followed instrux to the letter, still locked out.
But again, the password has never been the problem, (even though I’ve reset it at least 15 times now), it simply doesn’t like my username, and now I have no idea whether the “new” password I just set up through that lengthy phpMyAdmin process was meant to be valid, or if the old one was meant to be valid, but still neither one lets me in.
No idea, but I’m still locked out. Clicked the “forgot password” link and now no email at either address. I checked the email address associated w/the account in phpMyAdmin and it was still set to the previous one, so I changed it in the phpMyAdmin also and clicked “go”, but still no emails at either address. Maybe there’s a few days of lag-time from WordPress once you change your email address for it to update to a new one so I suppose I could carve out another day next week to try logging in to my account.
Someone suggested on another thread to try creating a new account and deleting the old one, which I will try and do and will presumably then have to spend several hours trying to migrate the site I’d already started over to a new user account which will hopefully not decide to lock me out.

In reply to: Forgot username — how to get reminder? The site (unfinished and currently looking like C R A P!!) is https://oldgrovewoodworks.bigbugvisuals.com/
Not sure about the plugins, there may be a couple activated on the site.
Yesterday I changed the email address associated w/the account, and today, attempting to reset the password via the login page (fwiw, even though the password does not seem to be the issue), it tells me there is no account associated w/that email. Even though the profile page last night when I was successfully logged in shows that there is. Maybe it just takes a day or so for the new email address to update, but at this point I can not get in to make any progress on finishing the site.

In reply to: Invalid Username even after resetting passwordAnd sorry to sound unreasonably grumpy, but I have wasted WAY too much time trying to do the most basic things with WordPress (like log in to my account??) and have lost much of my patience by now.
Forum: Fixing WordPress
In reply to: Forgot username — how to get reminder? It’s not that I don’t remember my password.
Not sure what is the point of my actually typing out a description of the problem if it’s going to be ignored completely, but to clarify AGAIN:
I HAVE reset the password dozens of times now. WordPress still tells me my username is invalid, even though it is NOT. (I took a screen capture of my profile page when I was successfully logged in to verify this.) So, upon entering the CORRECT username and the CORRECT password, I am still locked out. Unless WordPress randomly decides its in the mood to let me access my account after all.
According to other posts, I am not the only user who is having continual access problems for no valid reason.
