    cheers for the reply.

It doesnt matter if wpforo is on buddypress or not, they just wont playing nice.
It will not even let me log in with existing users.
It will not display correctly to existing users.
User role defaults change site to site.
so far wpforo has convinced me to try and find an alternative as it wont work with multisite and users registered on another site and is slowly screwing ALL my configuration elsewhere.
I DONT WANT PEOPLE BEING FORCED TO REGISTER WITH THE FORUM, MY STORE/MARKET TAKES PRIORITY.

After further messing around it seems if i register a user through the forum there is no issue. Problem is i am using multisite and wpmembers plugin, buddypress has no issue with the plugin and gets its login from one of 3 other sites. Gamipress is also working perfectly as is woocommerce and wcfm marketplace.

Perhaps some wpmembers integration could be handy!
if you have an explanation on how i can get login from buddypress which in turn gets it from wpmembers it would be much appreciated.

Cant import a theme or even really edit all of it, cant edit css, cant import a self hosted wordpress site. it is a joke.

Different users/needs. ok so why not toggle access to core files on/off. They cant be that different at the core, the same files can be implemented on both versions to get the same result, its just wordpress restrictions making it impossible. its just a ploy to take money i suspect.
No the assignment did not ask for custom theme or development but point and click aimed at kids did not seem suitable either. I want to learn not to be held back.
    Thanks for your time anyway.

But it seems those technical limitations are self imposed, i can add remove themes in both versions, i just cant upload my own theme to wordpress.com. I can easily edit html, css and php offline but not online, the natural habitat for those languages. From further reading the only issue i actually have is not paying $25 to upload a theme into wordpress.com, css could maybe be done with a third party plugin. Then its just the php, but the export should be dealing with this.
I can safely say i wont be recommending wordpress to anyone, will refuse to use it in a professional envivironment and frankly dont see what it has to offer beyond headache and restrictions.

I refuse to believe i cant even import a theme and add css and html. That is just ridiculous.
There has to be some connections between the 2, why would you write to software packages that do similar things in completely different ways.
I will be making a complaint to the university about this, expecting us to use this rubbish is a joke.

I get the difference between the 2 but at some level they are identical, wordpress just choose to not make any meaningful features available for free and online, exactly why i had to set up a server to build this project on.
I would at least expect the import/export feature to be of some use, and stupidly just assumed this, but no, all it does is move content.
If i cant upload my wordpress to the online wordpress whats the frickin’ point, some sort of API should have been developed by now to bridge the 2.
I should add this site will never go live, the requirement is just that it’s on wordpress.com for a week or 2.
The fact a degree course is asking me to use wordpress.com makes me wonder if i should be doing the course anyway, seems like something 12 year olds should be learning basic design on before progressing to code side of things.

Solved. It was a PHP issue. upgraded php to 7.2, then had to add

    sudo apt-get install php-mysql

because there was a mysql extension issue.

Turns out this is a decade old problem that wordpress seems to be refusing to fix. They are most likely pushing people towards their hosting and paid online version.
my server has all the requirements, including php 7 and for 5 frickin’ days it refuses to install.

This is clearly a wordpress incompatibility issue based on the silence.
Opening install.php in a browser does not work.
    why is this so complicated.
    HELP.

the urls take me to my apache page, dont even need https:// just the IP is enough.
Followed that to the letter and it does not work.
The author has missed out some configuration which is essential.

the guide i followed says nothing about virtual hosts and the others are mostly copy paste jobs.
There is almost NO real support anywhere which is frankly disgusting, not even any official stuff.
I am appaled that i can build a site with html and css in a few hours but i cant get a 5 minute install to work for days.
WP really need to look at streamlining this process.

the more i read the more convinced i need to create the virtual host file.

nothing else is even getting close to that. I think it may be your virtual host solution but i have no idea what to enter, where to put it.
Its all local, never going live and tbh getting to be too much trouble. I might just use the stupidly restrictive online version and do a terrible job.
