    HI Takis,

I’ve also think I’ve worked out the image size issue too.

When I export my images I export them at 50% quality.

I went to the server itself, took all the worpress versions of the same image so the 2048, 150, 300, 1024 etc.

If I opened the original file in photoshop, resized to 1024 and saved the image at the highest quality I got a bigger file that almost exactly matched the the one on the server. So the images are not compressed at the wordpress end.

Quick update. A typical blog post was 50mb with Adaptive images enabled (results via pingdom) – disabled and it shows the true post size. So it looks like Pingdom loads every available size as part of it’s check.

    As does Google’s speed tester.

    Hi Takis,

Just an update. I’m waiting for my web guy to get back to me and as soon as I know anything I’ll let you know. My site behaves the same way with adaptive images disabled. So it’s definitely not your plugin.

Best way to define this problem would be to go to a blog post in a web browser.
Save the first images to the desktop.
The resize the browser smaller and a 1024×683 file is served.

    2048×1365 = 375kb
    1024×683 = 518kb

    Crazy.

    Update again, sorry….

I was incorect with these figures:

    Online version 28.444 x 18.958 inches @ 72dpi
    Uploaded version 8.533 x 5.688 inches @ 72dpi – Incorrect, it’s uploaded at 240dpi

    Hold on, I’ve noticed something.

I opened both the online image then the original version pre upload.

In photoshop even though the dimensions are both 2048 x 1365, the online version is different in size in inches:

    Online version 28.444 x 18.958 inches @ 72dpi
    Uploaded version 8.533 x 5.688 inches @ 72dpi

So they LOOK the same but your versions are different, when I download via my browser they are as I uploaded them. But mobile and ipad, they appear to be scaled up.

So take the 900×600 version you posted, the image dimensions in inches are actually bigger than the original.

Update, Takis, I don’t think it is Adaptive images. I disabled your plugin and uploaded a new image, wordpress still makes changes to the dimensions. So something else is at play here but I don’t have any other image management software installed and running. So strange.

    Hi Takis,

    Well there’s definitely resizing happening.

When I use the Iphone 6 in portrait mode the image is downloaded as 768×512 at 338kb

    In landscape mode, 800 x 534 @ 325kb

So different file sizes but still not actually the much smaller in kb compared to the 2048 px long version.

With regards the original image, the file dimensions are exactly the same. My version corresponds exactly with the original file but your original file linked was massive. I tested your file again are right clicked on my pc to inspect in the browser and it still rolled in a 900+ kb

It’s like at your end the images are being scaled up.

    Thanks Takis,

I’ve looked at the images you grabbed:

    My Original file uploaded: 2048 x 1365 – 375kb

But your grab of the original file was close to 3 times the uploaded size, but when I download it myself from the browser it’s not that big but the correct size.

    2048 x 1365 – 905kb
    900 x 600 – 384kb
    640 x 427 – 203kb

    Regards,
    Chris

Update on this Takis, I disabled your plugin and the files still seem larger suggesting the plugin isn’t working at all to resize the images. Odd.

I’ve enabled it again in case you can see what’s stopping it!

    Chris

    Hi Takis,

    Thanks for our help.

Here is a direct link to a post https://www.chrisgilesphotography.com/wedding-photography/andaz-hotel-london-wedding/

My main blog section is where I have my main concerns. I have disabled Lazy load as well as Foobox. Those are my only image modifiers (that I know of).

My whole site is built on wordpress, although the main horizontal scrolling galleries are I think exempted from Adaptive images due to the image holders needing to be pre defined. But my actual blog posts are where I’m after the benefits of resizing.

    Thanks!
    Chris

    Hi Takis,

I’ve managed to do that. However something weird is happening. The image dimensions are smaller as expected, but the file sizes are bigger than the original upload.

So, say I uploaded an image at 2048 on the long edge and its 220kb, when I save it on the iPhone it can be 576px across but 300kb.

I use the app, photo investigator and also uploaded the image to Dropbox to verify the image size in kb.

It’s most odd and unexpected behaviour.
