Never mind, it was already working but WP does not rename the image with the dimensions suffixed to the thumbnail name IF the width of the original uploaded image is identical to the width of the thumbnail size defined in the functions.php file, notwithstanding that the image height is actually not the same.
For everyone out there working on the slider width in this nice theme, the code above works!
