Forum: Fixing WordPress
In reply to: Split 3 Blogs From 1 MySQL DBI have a related question – moving WordPress to another URL.
I’m new to WP and am not familiar with the different files contained in it.
I was reading the documentation and read something about ‘htaccess file’.
Recently I uninstalled FrontPage (FP) extensions. I was warned that, if uninstalled, FP deletes all htaccess files in sub-directories.
At the time I wasn’t aware WP had a htaccess file. I notice I don’t have an htaccess file in my copy of WP!
Question 1
Can someone tell me the contents of the htaccess file for V2.0? – so I can recreate it. And exactly which folder it’s supposed to be in.I’m also about to upgrade to v2.0.2 and am in the process of trying to figure out what I need to save/backup etc.
Question 2
I read somewhere on this site that we should upgrade to v2.0.1 and then v2.0.2. Is that right?I don’t have that option – as my host provides the upgrades and the only one available at the moment is v2.0.2. Is it really necessary?
Thanks in advance

In reply to: upgrading from 2.0 to 2.0.1Thanks… Another query.
The upgrade (via my cpanel/ fantastico) just installs the default theme(s) for WP.
So after the upgrade to v2.1 I just copy/overwrite the wp-content folder (ie themes and plugins folders).
Then select the new theme I want – and the posts, archives etc will appear as they are in the current version 2.0?
In an upgrade – the most thing is backing up the db and newer versions of WP can just access the db?
It’s a bit hard trying to explain what I mean in writing ??

In reply to: upgrading from 2.0 to 2.0.1Yes it’s a fantastico install.
I don’t want to attempt a manual upgrade – too technical.
I’ve changed the theme and added 2 plugins.
Won’t a ‘new install’ (ie upgrade to v2.1) delete all my existing posts (created using v2.0), as well as links and categories I’ve added to the new theme?
OR – is blog data (posts, categories, links, etc) contained in the wp-content folder (ie in the themes and plugins folders)?
After I upgrade to v2.1 – do I then just copy across the wp-content folder (from v2.0)?
Do I need to copy any other folders or files after upgrading (eg wp-admin or wp-includes)?

In reply to: Using Plugins to Ping SitesThe ‘smart update pinger’ plugin is supposed to stop pinging ping-o-matic every time we edit/ alter a post. It only pings POM when we publish the first time. This is to avoid ping spam. That’s my understanding of it and why I added it to my site.

In reply to: rss feed urlThanks. Are you saying that my rss feed url is – for example – https://mysite.com/wordpressblog/feed/
eg when submitting to a rss feed directory? And that this is the same as the examples below?I also found the following:
There are times when you want to tell someone your site’s feed address or URL, or you need it to submit it to search engines and directories, many of which now accept feed URL submissions. There are four possible URLs for each of your feeds. Any of these will work.
