That’s true, but wonder if the guys at TED know about it …

    Is there a recommended fix?

    Addendum: added to post ..

I’m guessing the guys at TED / Medium don’t realize that their embed won’t work for people who aren’t hosted on wordpress.com. Is there a workaround?

Ahh, ok. This is starting to make sense.

I didn’t realize this was going on with shortcodes ..

The embed code is from TED’s site …

Check out the video too, seriously cool – if icky!

THCB is here – in case you can tell anything by taking a quick look under the hood

To clarify – I am not exactly an experienced wordpress user. My work is on the content and editorial side. This is basically an emergency repair job. The wordpress consultant we hired did a pretty sloppy job. (Sorta but not really off topic: is there a good source for comparing consultant rates and reviews? We’ve been burned twice now and I’m a bit over the whole painful process. ; )

    So here’s what I’m thinking —

    1. Doing a test switch to another theme is not really an option as the site is already up and alive — unless we tested over a weekend if absolutely necessary. This sounds really painful to me.

it seems like the alternative is to sandbox a theme and see what happens. not sure how I would go about doing this, but I’ll look into it if the consensus is that I should and totally necessary. I’m hoping that #2 below will eliminate the need, though.

    2. It sounds like the wordpress 3.0 upgrade could be the key move, but not sure I feel experienced enough to handle on my own.

    3. It seems like option three is to switch a more stable template that preserves the current look and feel.

I’m guessing the most sensible thing to do is a combination of #2 and #3.

Anybody have any thoughts on this? Any help seriously appreciated!

Brilliant! You nailed it. I feel like a <dork> for making a simple mistake. But oh well, I guess that’s way the learning curve goes ..

    Thanks!

okay – this is a little technical for my skillset – I’m going to need to wait for somebody to give me a hand. In the meantime, can anybody think of a hack to get a widget to display?? I’m a bit desperate!!!

ah thanks, I’ll give that a try

    meanwhile, I meant is_front_page()

    @ ipstanenu

thanks. that may be a little beyond my skills – which are pretty limited. but I’ll try playing around with it.

@ andrea that sounds good. I may want to give that a try. maybe they’ll get around to fixing it

    ah, that must be it.

I have a plug in called “members only” installed as well as “network privacy” … an earlier admin installed the other, so I didn’t make the connection.

but it does seem strange that some users are running into the problem and others aren’t. but I guess that’s the way it works …

    thanks @ ipstenu

yeah, I’m talking multisite – I’m ultimately interested in doing for both our blog and those we host, but that ambitiousness can come later.

I”ll give your suggestion a shot

actually, one more thing: I’d like to display the full text of each comment

can you enlighten me as to how this could be done?

    or even if?

    hmm …

seems to work but ran into one issue. one of my users (an admin) is able to see dashboard but not see the site itself. other users seem to be accessing without difficulty,

my guess is this is something do with the settings I’ve chosen. the options are slightly confusing on Network Privacy, the plug in I selected. Any guesses what the difference between these options is … ?

Stuff like this makes my head hurt ..

    – I would like only logged in users who are registered subscribers to see my blog.
    – I would like only administrators of this blog, and network to see my blog.
    – I would like my site to be visible only to Registered network users.
    – I would like my site to be visible only to Site subscribers.
    – I would like my site to be visible only to Site administrators.

    hmmm …. thanks!!!

that sounds like it would be easier than moving a bunch of files and themes when it comes time to go live …

can you point me in the direction of a plug in that might do the trick?

not sure I really know what to look for – a user group plug in?

    Thread Starter wordpig

    (@wordpig)

    okay, thanks.

this is a little more complicated than it should be because the blog isn’t yet live and open to the public

lets say we’re dealing with blog.org

And the user has a blog hosted at blog.org/user

I want them to have access to their blog, but not the blog.org (the top level) content we’re still working on …

Is this possible? Or does it make sensed to let them create their blog somewhere else – say a new WP account set up for – and then move their files over..
