A follow-up: Nothing I did made the problem go away so I got my ISP to restore my vs. 2.8.2 from backup and now all is well again. I’m hesitant to upgrade now. Maybe I’ll wait for 2.8.4?

P.S. Okay, it’s broken again. I can’t see the site again, even when I’m logged in and even though I have a new .htaccess file. Any final ideas/suggestions welcome. Could it be an issue with my ISP somehow?

Okay, I found the spot in that link esmi gave me that told me how to recreate .htaccess so I did that, and for the time being I can see my blog again! However, I have one more question: how do I reset the broken links (e.g. to comments on my Death-Defiance post)? I apologize for my ignorance and appreciate anyone’s guidance.

Thanks very much, Esmi. I tried your first two suggestions (deactivating all plugins and theme-change to default) and nothing improved. Re. .htaccess: Sadly, I’m not technical. Once I tried deleting .htaccess and recreating it, and that made my blog vanish; I needed a programmer friend to help me get it visible again.

    • Is there a reference that tells a a nontechnical user how to delete and recreate .htaccess? It sure didn’t work via ftp when I tried.
    • Is it possible to restore my WP version to 2.8.2 automatically, just to see if that helps, or do I have to download the legacy version and do it manually?

    Again, Thanks

I’m having a technical problem with my video player and someone in the support forum asked if I’m using SEF URLs. I think I am, but I don’t know the tech definition. Are you able to tell by looking at my blog? https://www.wormlips.com

    Thanks.

Just want to check back in to say I figured out my problem. Nothing wrong with 2.5, but only with me!

Yesterday I happened to be on the settings > miscellaneous page and found the problem. If the field next to thumbnail size is blank, it won’t create a thumbnail at all. I put numbers in there, and left the medium size blank since I never use it, and voila: works like a charm. Hope this helps someone else who didn’t get to that options page.

One more variation on the problem: Mine is auto-creating only the medium-sized image and not the thumbnail size, so when I tell the media tool to insert a thumbnail, it uses the full image and inserts code to display it small … which is a drag when you have a page with a lot of photos because it takes forever to load.

I’m using ImageReady to create my photos (so they’re all RGB jpgs) and none is larger than around 70K, so they’re not choking the system.

I don’t know much about forums; is this considered a bug that we submit a report on?

Over the past months I’ve seen queries from people (like me) who want to password-protect a category rather than its posts individually.

Following a suggestion from another discussion about this same thing, I checked out Role Manager; but it has a different function — or at least *I* can’t see how it might make a category readable only by invitation.

Does anyone know if there have been developments on this front?
