In reply to: Get Rid of Auto-Update>> The point to that is the WP community is what keeps us from being the NSA. We’re open, public, and honest about what we’re doing here. <<
We (the community) appreciate that sentiment. All the same, we trust, but verify with our offline servers by testing before deploying and/or researching.
To that effort, maybe some users would like notifications (email, popups..) and maybe others just auto update. I definitely think this is a op-in feature..
BTW, this is what Microsoft did many years ago with their service packs..until IT said uh-uh to their servers.

In reply to: MySQL (and maybe PHP)Thanks for the reply.
I was curious about the role MySQL plays in a big corporation like Oracle. Wow, $2000/yr for standard edition MySQL support (er subscription.) $1200/yr for Linux support! Must be really good support.. ??

In reply to: MySQL (and maybe PHP)Thanks for the response.
I ask since other software (Sun/Oracle OpenOffice have stopped developing for that office suite according to what I’ve read.) Would MySQL be different from OpenOffice? Perhaps other DBMSs would work for WordPress if MySQL suffers the same as fate as OpenOffice.. Just wondering.

>> I can’t in any way, shape or form, imagine why it should be. <<
Just the cost is all. $299.As far as the “unsavory tactics” go, I have so far chosen some of the folks Matt M. recommends which why I started with Hybrid and Thematic. Oh, and the starting cost too.
I like Genesis, but I need to get at the theme and try things out with the admin on my own box.
Thanks for the suggestions.

>> But in any case, the theme framework will be required to run any child theme developed for it. <<Seems to be a show stopper there..buying the framework in the other words. No such thing as a trial version of the framework I guess. What would be nice would be a video of the admin interface showing the options for menus, widgets, etc. Other theme companies (DIYthemes-thesis, iThemes) have these “look before you leap” videos. I’m checking out Hybrid and Thematic right now, but I would like to find a commercial version at some point.
Thanks for the reply.

>> I wish there was a way to try it before purchase. <<Agreed. I’ve spent way TOO much time on finding a theme. But, I’ve learned a little about WP in the process..so it’s all good.
Thanks for the reply too.
