The default method is for the plugin to automatically add the shortcode to the page or post content when you select a PDF from your Media Gallery. This can be disabled using a PHP snippet. Instructions available here in our FAQ: https://wp-pdf.com/kb/stop-the-pdf-embedder-shortcode-being-inserted-into-posts-automatically/

That is a concern for us also and with the recent push to users to try the Gutenberg plugin, we have been in discussions internally to look at what we can do to make this easier for our users. No ETA when we will have something available as I am sure you can understand that it’s still a bit of a moving target as Gutenberg itself is still in development.

Gutenberg Editor and PDF Embedder FAQ

Hi nicolateodori,

The PDF Embedder does currently work with the Gutenberg editor provided that you use the correct content block that supports shortcodes. We did conduct some tests and the PDF Embedder does work correctly when you add the shortcode manually using the Custom HTML Block or the Shortcode Widget within the Gutenberg editor. As with many “drag and drop” editors, it handles the Media Gallery differently than the default editor and only displays images so you will need to keep the Media Gallery open in an additional browser tab to copy the file path to manually paste into the shortcode [pdf-embedder url=”path-to-pdf”]. There are no immediate plans to make changes to our plugin as the Gutenberg editor itself is still undergoing development.

I visited the link you provided – thanks for that – but didn’t see an “Invalid PDF Structure” error.

I did see that the PDF was only showing up as a link which would indicate that there is a conflict happening on your site that is breaking the PDF Embedder functionality. The PDF document itself is accessible so the plugin shouldn’t have any difficulties loading it. I’m sorry to disappoint you but the PDF Embedder does not have a feature to provide a preview of the document. The PDF Embedder will display the document in its entirety.

Hi Frederic,

The file size is limited to your WP configuration; however, for best results we recommend that you compress your PDFs as much as possible to decrease the loading time. Services such as SmallPDF are particularly useful and this will save data and decrease the loading time for your users.

Like all JavaScript functionality, browser support will vary but it has good support by Chrome, Firefox, and Opera, with moderate support for most features in IE11/Edge and Safari 9+.

I’m sorry to disappoint you but there isn’t an automatic / toggle method to choose whether a PDF is embedded or added using the WP default link method; however, we do have a snippet that you can use to deactivate the automatic insertion of the shortcode: https://wp-pdf.com/kb/stop-the-pdf-embedder-shortcode-being-inserted-into-posts-automatically/
