I’no having this issue any more, but I wanted to make it clear that simply deactivating the other SMTP plugin had no effect, it had to be completely removed.

Update: I reinstalled the Easy WP SMTP plugin to try to set up the easy way first. I got the error 500 issue again and had to completely remove the Easy WP SMTP plugin to log in.

Just so you know in case you are trying several SMTP plugins, Gmail SMTP clashes with Easy WP SMTP (and maybe with others) so try uninstalling them if you get issues with Gmail SMTP.

For anybody else having this issue, using the Inspect Element of Google Chrome pinpointed this to a SMTP plugin still being accidentally in debug mode and reporting lots of SMTP responses back which were interpreted as a fail. Disabling the debugging has fixed this.

I will mark as resolved.
