Thanks for your reply, and sorry I was a little impatient with @helldog2018 earlier. I have had problem after problem after problem with setting up this website, it‘s taking far longer than I could ever have imagined and it’s beginning to wear me down. But I should not have taken it out on someone else.

I am the admin and sole user of the website.

Since you asked about installations, last week I installed the Wordfence plugin. However, to illustrate the problems I’ve had, after a couple of days all reference to it on the dashboard disappeared when there was an update, although it was still visible inside the program. Earlier this week I removed it from there and uploaded it afresh.

I also uploaded the UpDraftPlus backup plugin a few days ago. However, it did not complete the backups successfully. That was repaired by my hosting company – but I have just seen that it was unsuccessful again on its daily runthrough a couple of hours ago, so I will have to ask them to try again!

Any advice you can give about writing on the pages or inserting pdf’s on them will be very welcome. I am grateful for your offer to provide it.

I know the difference between archives, posts and pages. Please don‘t talk down to me. But I am facing a maddening problem with my website – something that I could do last week but cannot do now. And I have not managed to find anyone who is willing and able to give me any useful advice for it.

What I describe in this topic is related to the other one I set up, but not the same. That is why I created it too. After creating the other topic, it occurred to me that the basic problem may that I cannot write text on these pages, not that I cannot insert pdf’s in them. That is why I created this as a separate topic. I am an ordinary member of the public, not a technician, and I do not know which of those two aspects of the problem is the underlying one.

Thank you. I know you are trying to help and I am very grateful for it. And I know the difference between posts and pages. However, when I said I wanted to create “in effect an archive” I meant “archive” in the general sense, and not WordPress’ narrow sense of the place where you can find previous posts from the website itself. Sorry if that was confusing.

Under each heading in the relevant part of my menu I want a single page, on which I will write a series of names like the “Ten Points for Banking Reform – for Green House, Feb 2012” that I quoted. Each one will contain a link to a pdf file stored on the website (and located presumably in the Media Library).

Last week I was able to set that up just as I wanted to, but I cannot do so now. That is the problem I am facing. How can I solve it?

Sorry, I don’t understand those categories. What is the difference between an “official” page and a “normal” page? I thought there were just “pages.”

What I want to create here is in effect an archive of things I have written in the past, which I can upload to the site from my computer. As such it will be static, but I want to be able to add new items to any page as and when I get them published.

According to the navigation menu on my dashboard, the item https://tomlines.org.gridhosted.co.uk/category/other-papers/ is a “category” and all the items that drop down below it are “pages.” Have I set that up in the best way or not?

Thank you for your advice, but I don’t understand. I think you can go to my page https://tomlines.org.gridhosted.co.uk/banking-and-finance/ and see what I did last week. It contains just this line: “Ten Points for Banking Reform – for Green House, Feb 2012.” Here, “Ten Points for Banking Reform” covers a link to a pdf file in the Media Library, which you can read when you click on it. The rest of the line is text that I added. I got it to work like that last week, but I can’t now.

I don’t want to embed any pdf’s in the sense of putting their actual texts on a page, but to make them accessible from one. I did this last week by clicking on “Insert into page” on the dashboard at the Media Library. If that doesn’t mean putting a link to the file on the page, what does it mean?

It also looks as though I cannot write anything directly on these pages now either, with or without any links to other files. What can the fault be and how can I correct it?

Thank you. I haven‘t got the time to plough through 19,854 topic headings to see if the one I really need is there. But I will see if I can find something.

Thank you for this. It is unclear to me who I should ask for advice on this question. Have you any suggestions? I am an ordinary member of the public and not a professional programmer, and I do not have the resources to pay for advice, unfortunately.
Yesterday I did disable all the plugins but it made no difference.

Thank you. Have you any idea then why WordPress is failing to upload pdf files on to pages of my website, whether I try to do so from the Media Library or by directly uploading them from my computer’s memory?

Thank you for your reply but I don’t entirely understand it. Are you saying I should or I shouldn’t use a Contact Form 7 if I want to insert pdf files?
Last week I inserted a pdf file on a WordPress page, and my question was why I am unable to do so now. I have to admit that previously I faced the same problem with that page and that file as now, and I don’t know how it came to be resolved, if only for a few days.
So can you please clarify your advice? Thank you in advance.

As a trial run a week ago, I uploaded and inserted a pdf file in a page on a WordPress site that I am developing. It works exactly as required. But when I tried again yesterday and this morning, nothing happened.
I can upload pdf files from my computer and they go to my Media Library. There I click on the file and “Insert into page” but nothing happens – no error message, no visible change on the page in the dashboard, no change in the page on the actual site when I refresh it. I tried to insert on another page the file that I uploaded and inserted last week – but again, no result at all.
I have looked at all the relevant WP Beginner and www.ads-software.com guidance pages that I can find, and not found anything that was any help.
What can I do about this?

In the fifth line of my request (above), I wrote “no error file.” That should be “no error message.”

    Thank you.

I have looked at the website on FileZilla/ftp and I cannot see the Wordfence plugin there. Seven plugins are listed but none of them is Wordfence. The most similar name is wpclef. I have also just tried to instal Wordfence again, and again got the reply “Installation failed: Destination folder already exists.”

    Any thoughts?
