Hello jjw3009, there can be multiple reasons for this error.

Possible solutions:
– problems with .htaccess (make a backup of it and remove it, if it solves the problem, you have found your problem)
– problems with security plugins (try to deactivate the plugins one by one trough ftp/phpmyadmin)
– incorrect file permissions (most of the times the hosting can help you with this option)

To redirect you could add the following code into the functions.php / or a registration plugin. You can put your url on the place of the ‘/pageurl’

    return home_url( '/pageurl' );
}

add_filter( 'registration_redirect', 'wpse_19692_registration_redirect' );
