I manage a few wordpress sites since 2015 and I never would have thought that merely installing and activating a plugin could cause instant and irreversible loss of data.
Since then I was able to roll back to an earlier version using an incremental weekly backup, so “problem solved” I guess. An explanation would be welcome though.
