Step 2 showed me this even though step 1 detected the ssl. How could that be?

By turning on SSL, your server must support SSL (https://) or this could make your website inaccessible.

I network activated it for my subdomains because this said it could.

Now I can’t acces the site which says “can’t establish secure connection” for the https url. I tried emptying the browser’s cache.

Do I just delete the plugin’s folder in my cpanel?

    Hi Stacy,

Have you also changed your website’s link from HTTP to HTTPS in Settings > General?

Your hosting company can also help you with this.

To restore access to your site, you can delete the folder of our plugin in your cPanel’s file manager (or FTP) in public_html/wp-content/plugins/

No step in your plugin tells me this. Does this plugin create that option in settings because I otherwise don’t have it. Not on my main blog , nor in network settings.

Why would it work on my phone but not on safari desktop if that’s the case? Yes , I emailed my cache, cleared history , closed the browser, and even used a different user account on my comp.

In Settings > General, do you see WordPress Address (URL) and Site Address (URL)? You can change those to HTTPS (just make sure your hosting has SSL enabled for your website).

    No.

I suggest contacting your hosting company about the above, as they may have modified your WordPress system, unfortunately.

They haven’t. I only recently migrated.

I’m not sure I need this plugin to actually activate the cert for wp since the front end on the main blog says secure without any plugin, only to force https which is conflicting with safari desktop. I can still access securely via firefox desktop and safari on my mobile. I can only access insecurely on safari desktop when disabling the plugin. This plugin seems to secure the admin pages and subdomains because they are not secure without it even though the main blog’s front end is.

Changing the site url in multisite is actually located in network> sites > site> settings, not general>settings. However, the main blog does not allow editing the url, only the subsites. I’m scared to try changing the subsite’s urls with your plugin to see if they would be securely accessible with safari desktop. Is your plugin supposed to still say “By turning on SSL, your server must support SSL (https://) or this could make your website inaccessible” for step 2 if the cert was detected in step 1? I don’t want to lose firefox access too.

Please look into the safari desktop conflict for 10.1.2.

It seems that your plugin automatically redirects everything to https on activation, not by enabling a setting.

    Thread Starter Stacy (non coder)

    (@functionmunchkin)

Well I tried change sub blog’s url to https and used your network menu option (instead of the enable button via the plugin url to network activate), that sub site still says not secure on firefox desktop so the url change didn’t matter.

This time I have no padlock showing on safari mobile and the main admin on firefox desktop is secure when it’s deactivated. Inconsistencies.

    (@functionmunchkin)

Well now I’ve lost the subdomains on firefox desktop after deleting this plugin because it’s still forcing https on them. Getting SSL_ERROR_BAD_CERT_DOMAIN which explains that the sub is using an invalid cert and that my host’s cert is only for the nameserver domain ( which includes a wildcard one so I’m not sure why that wouldn’t cover subs).

How to fully remove whatever your plugin did?

    Thread Starter Stacy (non coder)

    (@functionmunchkin)

Ok. I had to clear firefox cache to access the subsites via http. Gladly that worked better than safari desktop.

Some of these steps probably need to be done before using this plugin. https://www.wpbeginner.com/wp-tutorials/how-to-add-ssl-and-https-in-wordpress/

Thanks, Stacy, for your updates. I did not realise that you were trying to make this work on a multisite.

Thanks for your feedback, it might help others that have issues with getting it working on a multisite.

    (@functionmunchkin)

But this should’ve worked on multisite right since there’s network activation? Which of these steps does one have to do from here before using your plugin for the padlock? https://www.wpbeginner.com/wp-tutorials/how-to-add-ssl-and-https-in-wordpress/

Was it supposed to still say “By turning on SSL, your server must support SSL (https://) or this could make your website inaccessible” ” if the cert was detected in step 1?

Here is how to change the main site url for multisite which is probably risky and should be avoided. https://wpengine.com/support/how-to-change-a-multi-site-primary-domain/
