• Hello,

I’ve recently started getting errors when sending messages. It appears (at least to me) to be random, I’d done some tests myself and some have gone through and others have not. Originally the error I got was # Submission was referred to as spam (Orange) and I thought it would be because I have a space for the writer to input more than one URL. I removed that option and now the error is # Sender’s message was failed to send (Orange).

I’ve reviewed the responses and don’t see anything that might trigger an error/spam filter. I looked at the FAQs and I have done a search for this but most of the posts I found were over a year old and for older versions.

    Here’s some extra info

    WP Version 3.8
    CF7 Verison 3.6

Do you receive other mail (like comment notifications) from WordPress?
Yes, some of the messages have gone through, others haven’t. As for specifically comment notifications, I use a FB plugin not the comments.php so I haven’t gotten emails from WP directly recently

What hosting service do you use?
    InMotion Hosting

What version of PHP do you use?
    5.3.27

What other plugins do you use?
Advanced Custom Fields, Askimet, Better WP Security, Contact Form 7 Autoresponders Addon, Dynamic to Top, SEO Ultimate, Ultimate Maintenance Mode, WP SuperCache

Do you use a SMTP plugin like WP Mail SMTP? Does it solve the issue?
I installed it prior to writing this post. The test email from the plugin worked, however it didn’t help with Contact Form 7

    What theme do you use?
It’s a custom theme. That said, I tested it with the latest default WP theme and am still having the same issue so I don’t think it’s related to the theme

Here’s where my form resides https://yaritsaarenas.com/survey I welcome any help or insight to resolve

  • Please include all your input in the Form and Mail sections of the CF7 interface.

Sender’s message was failed to send (Orange) – is a sign of a spam message.

WP SuperCache – is a known source of issues with CF7.

SMTP – don’t use this if you don’t need to. Most people on quality hosting don’t need to. It can creates other problems as it requires Email Authentication.

Overall it sounds like the issue is most likely due to how you collect and use the user’s email address in CF7.

    Same problem here.
Fast Secure Contact Form works just fine.

What would be the issue then?

@hvilledev – As per the Forum Welcome, please post your own topic.

Posting in an existing topic prevents being able to track issues by topic. Added to which, your problem – despite any similarity in symptoms – is likely to be completely different.

@buzztone I’m not using SMTP, I just saw it was one of the questions asked on a previous comment and I wanted to provide as much info as possible up-front. I’ve jused SuperCache along with CF7 for a long time and never had issues, but perhaps something happened in a recent upgrade.

Could you provide a little more info on your last statement? Is there anything off-hand you can think might be a common factor if this were the case? The test you send went through, but a later test didn’t.

Overall it sounds like the issue is most likely due to how you collect and use the user’s email address in CF7.

Thanks so much for you time and help!

If you are getting intermittent fail to send emails, it is most likely due to using the email address submitted by the user as the From Email Address in CF7. If your host has restrictions on what email addresses can be sent from that can cause problems.

Your install put the values in the from field.

    [your-name] <[your-email]>

    Why?????
all I did was make up an email that tells which form it comes from. For example.

    From: [email protected]

    Now it works perfectly.
You may want up update your documentation or change the default install to include a made up from email using the client’s domain.

RE: Your install put the values in the from field.
    [your-name] <[your-email]>
    Why?????

Using the default [your-name] <[your-email]> is very useful. It means you can simply hit reply to answer emails that you receive from people filling in your form. I use it on all my forms.

But you need hosting that allows any email to be used as the From email. Most quality hosting does that.

For some hosts though it needs to be a valid email on that domain. I would never use a host that imposes that restriction, but at over 10,000 downloads per day it’s inevitable that some people will have hosts that do.

As this is a very common question in this forum, I have written a detailed article on this topic, which the plugin author has linked to at Contact Form 7 Email Issues.
