User profile – adding paragraphs, hyperlinks, etc.

Hello, from the front page of my site, I have it set to when you click the author’s name, it takes you to a generated author page with the info the author inputs from the user profile page. But it displays it in one ginormous paragraph. adding basic html/php such as <span>, <p>, <url=…>#</url>, #, doesn’t seem to change it. In fact, the code gets kicked out of the user profile page if i try to update it.
Does anyone have an idea how I could make any of the above happen? Thank you!
